The last thing you wanted to do on your first week of school was to lose your head over a mathematical equation that seemed to go on forever. Fall has begun and you were back to the university. For the next nine months, you would be bonding with your friends, classmates, professors and textbooks. Exciting, isn't it?

You were walking with your good friend Lili near the soccer field, whining about every little thing that didn't turn out as planned.

"Oh Lili," You sighed. "You should've seen the look in their eyes. They all look like vultures waiting for dinner!"

Lili laughed. You've been ranting about your majors professors since you ran into your friend at the corridor.

You looked around and frowned. Everything else seemed to be right into place. Professors were passing by the hallways with their suitcases in hand. Students were having a good laugh with their friends, catching up with their lives since summer vacation. The soccer team was running across the field, roaring wildly as one of them goaled the ball.

"Don't stress yourself too much, __________. It's just the beginning of the term!" Lili patted your shoulder. "All will be‒"

Lili wasn't able to finish her sentence and for a millisecond, you swore you saw her eyes widen alarmingly. Everyone around cheered and you had no clue what on earth just happened. Little did you know, the ball was firing at your direction and Gilbert Beilschmidt‒one of the players‒ dashed towards you to dodge it away.

It all happened in an instant that the second you realized what he had done, he carried on to the field like nothing happened. You just smiled in appreciation as your cheeks turned red.

Until now, you were still having a hard time believing how you and Gilbert ended up being friends. Since the day you entered the university, he had been this swaggering soccer player to you. Having classes with him made you want to roll down the staircase instead. But you figured out that all those annoying antics he did in school were just for show. The way you saw him was the total opposite of who he really was after you met his little brother Ludwig. They eventually let you inside their private lives‒ you were even there for them during their toughest times. And from those days, you understood.

You wondered why those people cheered. Do they know what's between you and him? It's funny because Gilbert never even admitted anything. You were only friends and he was just repaying you for your kindness to him and his brother.

But what about that one time he kissed you when he finally broke down in front of you? Was it out of gratitude that you were always there for him? Oh love, you treacherous thing! You wished you could talk to Francis about this matter.

"When will be the submission?" Gilbert asked, putting his jacket on. He was about to take Ludwig to school when he found out about your unfinished papers in business math.

"Tomorrow," You replied.

"Okay. Meet me at the library after class," He ordered
.
Ludwig gave you a goodbye hug before going after his big brother.

"Be a good boy, okay?" You told the first grader.

"Ja!" He said with a toothless grin and let go.

If there's someone who's concerned about your grades in math, it would be Gilbert. Not you. You find it cute when he gets paranoid about it. It's just a minor, you always say. Exactly the point! And you're at the verge of flunking it, he always argues. You would just laugh it off while he would finish your homework. Sometimes, it shames you to the point that you wouldn't bother telling him you need help but he would always find out like this one.

You looked at the clock and realized it was only a few minutes before your first morning class. Like an idiot, you ran around the house to gather all your things and went to the dining area to say goodbye to your other housemates, Vash and Lili.

You've had enough of your roommates so you decided to move in with the siblings. It was the same time when Gilbert and Ludwig lost their home. Gilbert never considered living under the same roof with Antonio and Francis, thinking how their behavior would affect Ludwig's growth. Though their distant Austrian cousin was telling the Beilschmidts to come live with them, Gilbert declined and chose to stick around.

And so, your day pushed through. You were trying your best to be attentive but you were feeling uneasy. Even your most favorite subjects failed to keep your attention and the bad thing is you don't know why. Your mind kept on fluttering somewhere else and all you wanted to do was go home.

"Did you enjoy the party last Friday, _________?" Matthias, your political geography classmate, asked.

"You bet I did!" You said, keeping up with the Dane.

"Too bad your boyfriend didn't make it," he said.

You didn't have any witty answer under your sleeve this time. You sneezed.

"Oh dear. Did you catch a cold? It was raining pretty hard when you left. You should've waited for me to drive you home," he said, concern in his blue eyes.

"No, it's alright. I really needed to go home at that hour and you guys were having fun!" You laughed. "Hey, I have to go now. Someone's waiting for me at the library."

"Okay. See you around, sweet thing! Tell your boyfriend I said hi!" Matthias said before you headed for the door.

You rolled your eyes with an amused sigh. He's not my boyfriend.

You chose the table near the shelves, the table you always use whenever you would have your tutorial. You took the papers from your bag and spread them in front of you.

Back then you thought you would be safe from any mathematics subject if you pursue law. But the school curriculum just proved you wrong. Here they are‒ the quadratic formula, square root, integers‒ haunting you to the very end. Then here comes your friend, Gilbert the engineering major. Heck, what would you do without him? You couldn't thank him enough.

But where is he? He's late. Well, he's always late. He'll be in a minute, maybe? He likes surprising you, anyway. As much as you know him, he always comes around when you least expect him. He would put his arms around you from behind and you would shiver to your surprise.

Would it be possible that he was already showing hints of affection you just don't give much attention? You couldn't expect too much from a person especially from someone who doesn't make the boundaries clear yet.

You waited until the next half hour and even tried solving the equations by yourself. He must have forgotten about it. The guy was as busy as you were. You still had other things to do beside this subject and they weighed more important. It was when you reached for your phone, only to find out that it wasn't with you all along. You waited for another five minutes and when he didn't come, you decided to leave.

Your phone was the first thing you looked for.

Eight missed calls

Hey, __________. I'm sorry I can't meet you at the library after class but I promise I'll work on it at home.

It wasn't like he ditched you or something. It wasn't his fault that you left your phone at home and  you couldn't answer a simple mathematical problem. There was no reason to get irritated at all but at the moment, you were.

You took your other paperwork up to the penthouse where you found Vash and Lili helping Ludwig with his homework. They greeted upon seeing you.

You greeted back and proceeded at the other table where it was breezier. The uneasiness was there again, making it difficult for you to concentrate on what you were doing. You started feeling your heart palpitate inside your chest; you stopped and stared at the vast afternoon horizon. Cold beads of sweat trickled on your skin and everything spun.

The door cracked open and Ludwig called out his brother's name as he welcomed him with a hug.

"Were you doing your homework already?" Gilbert asked.

"Ja. Vash and Lili are helping me!" Ludwig said with a proud smile. The Swiss siblings exchanged smiles with Gilbert.

"Alright. Go on then," Gilbert said, letting his brother go.

You managed to stand up, attempting to collect your things to go back to your room.

"___________," Gilbert said. "I'm sorry if I wasn't able to meet you. Have you been waiting? I've been called at our dean's office after I picked Ludwig from school. I tried calling you but‒"

"No, it's alright. I managed to do it myself," It took all your energy to smile and look at him even though all you could see was his blurred figure. "It's not your fault I couldn't answer a simple problem like that."

He didn't answer. It wasn't your intention to hurt him, but you couldn't put the right words together.

"You're stressed," he said, reaching for you.

Your heart throbbed faster by the second. Your hands were ice cold. Everything was gray like the TV channels with no network.  You still tried to pay attention to what he was saying but nothing worked.

"____________?"

The last thing you knew was falling into his arms.

You wouldn't have awakened yet if it wasn't for your grumbling stomach. The TV was on and Gilbert was sitting beside you, remote on one hand, watching his national soccer team play. You removed the wet towel from your forehead.

Gilbert looked at you as your stomach grumbled again.

"That was embarrassing," you spoke.

You both laughed.

"What time is it?"

"Ten minutes to six in the morning."

"I was out that long?!"

He merely nodded and kept his eyes glued on the TV. You studied his face for a while. The dark circles around his sleepy eyes confirmed that he was up the entire night.

"Don't you get tired of anything?" you asked.

He smiled at you, his crimson eyes glowing.

"No," He said and put his hand on your neck to feel your temperature. "I'm awesome."

Aaaaaaaand the cocky soccer player strikes again.

"I'll go get you something to eat," But before he could rise from the bed, you snatched his arm and prevented him from leaving.

Gilbert lay beside you and tucked himself under the same blanket. He was so close, leaning his forehead against yours and closed his eyes.

"My teammates asked me why I wasn't with my girlfriend last Friday's party," he said and took your hand. It felt ablaze against his. "And I told them that I have trust in her and she could take care of herself."

"I should've known I was wrong," He continued as he played with your hand and you did the same. "From now on, I'll take care of her."

He held out your hands against the soft sunlight then he pressed them to his chest, close to his heart.

At last, the line was drawn. You wouldn't have to say I love you when he's not listening.
I never thought that you would be the one to hold my heart
But you came around and you knocked me off the ground from the start

You put your arms around me
And I believe that it's easier for you to let me go

You must know by now how a song creeps into my imagination… :iconpervyprussiaplz:

Sorry for this little nonsense. This had been long since abandoned in my computer for some reasons. I only decided to throw myself back into the fluffy work because recently, I’ve been watching and reading disturbing stories that seemed to suck the happiness and sanity out of me. *sniff sniff*

This is actually an interlude between [link] and [link]. I shall be working on the epilogue soon. ^^;
